    Default New cruncher in town

hey everyone, just joined the team

    thought I'd post my specs:

    Intel Q6600 2.4GHz
    2GB RAM DDR2 800MHz
    320GB HDD
    running vista home premium x64

    so far, when running boinc:
every core takes care of 1 WU so that's 4WU's at a time.
time to crunch depends, from 25 minutes, to 3hrs
And the core temperature stays at a nice 38°C

What tool do you use to read the temperature? 38°C under load is very low.
    Any plans on overclocking it?

    Hey

I have an MSi Mobo, so it came with the DualCoreCenter software which allows you to monitor voltages, temperatures, fan speeds etc.

    I also installed Speedfan (4.32)

Note that 37°C is the cpu temperature (the one that can't go above 60°C according to intel), not the actual core temperature. Each core is now around 49°C.

I know it looks low, but I only bought the computer recently, so there's no dust yet which influences the temperature. I'm sure it'll go up over time.
Also, i got a case from coolermaster (Mystique 632) which provides a constant flow of air from the front to the back with 2 large fans.

Not planning to overclock it, as I don't really know much about that, and cause I don't see why i should, it's fast enough as it is

edit: system temperature is around 30°C (thanx to my coolermaster case)

Most Q6600's are capable of 3.2GHz, so overclocking from 4*2.4GHz to 4*3.2GHz would increase your BOINC-output with 33% too

That's correct but when overclocking the Q6600 that much the standard cooling won't be sufficient. In that case I would recommend replacing it by something more 'heavy' like Zalman or Scythe.

Changing project will also help to boost the credits. Seti is not really "credits-friendly". When using Windows as OS I would recommend running QMC or RieselSieve to boost your credits (if boosting your credits is what you want).

I'm not in it just for the credits,I also wanna find ET haha

    I'll think about that overclocking

Edit: i was wondering if it's "bad" for your cpu to be running at 100% so often?

As long as you make sure it is cooled sufficiently then there is no problem running it at 100% 24/24 7/7. I personally have CPU's which are already running like that for a couple of years without being offline for 1 single day.

Overclocking till 10% over it's normal rate is rather safe
since many mainbords like MSI can already setup this in the BIOS.

When your cpu is a constant 100% usage it's lifetime won't be much shorter I think. Since it runs in a constant cycle when it's doing 'nothing' it's executing the NOP command (No Operation). The newer mainboards use this to lower CPU speed , so that the system consumes less power (called underclocking).

The only thing that brings down the lifetime of your CPU is the temperature.
(Below 50° is certainly safe - higher depends on your hardware).
But if you use good coolers and have a good case flow it will be OK I think.
