    It seems it's about time I use that cpu for a testdrive

    Interesting links there to bookmark. Thanks.

    Yes, it would seem the inscription doesn't fit the contents. Maybe they don't look so closely for the ES. The mobo and cpu-z do recognize it as a Q9550 though instead of a QX9650. Only coretemp thinks it's some mobile cpu. Mobile, I'd hardly call my case mobile. It almost takes a crane to move it.

    Does your mobo/bios support the qx9650? Are you sure you can't change the multiplier upwards?

    It should do. It's a pretty recent Asus Maximus Formula SE (X38 ). I have given it the latest BIOS, except for a beta version. In the Asus forum I read about people that put a QX9650 in it. I can vary the multiplier from 6 to 8. 8.5 being the default.

    I will enquire with the vendor about it. He has a few more for sale.

    Time to update this... RIP
    I killed the QX9650 by pushing 1.7V through it

    EEK 1.7V

    Sorry to hear. Just wondering. How far did you push it safely before it gave in?

    I have now 2 Q9550
    - The ES in my X38 motherboard. Running 3.66GHz at 1.3625V. I also had to up vFSB and vNB already. Probably not a good sign.
    - A C1 stepping retail unit. This one runs in my P5W DH Deluxe. Voltages at Auto. The BIOS contains an error, in that the first vCore step I can choose is 1.45V. Haven't tried yet, but I think that's way too much on aircooling. Now running 3.14GHz. Mobo is surely a bottleneck here. Now runs 370MHz base speed. I tried 400 with multiplier 8, but it won't even boot. Tried raising vFSB and vICH, but didn't help.

    I was trying to get a SuperPi 1M as fast as possible at higher and higher clockspeeds, and higher and higher voltages:
    1.35V = 4.0GHz
    1.40V = 4.1GHz
    1.45V = 4.2GHz
    1.55V = 4.3GHz
    1.65V = 4.5GHz
    1.70V = 4.55GHz, but didn't boot no more after rebooting, even not in another board.
    It was aircooled, by a zalman 9700Nt or Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. Ah well... I got myself a new one already
