    Standaard Boinc 6.x.x

Rumour has it that the Boinc 6.x.x is scheduled for its official launch tomorrow.

For the moment there is no pressing need to do the change, but all projects should run correctly with the new client.

Personally I will wait a while before changing over, see how stable it is. There is another reason why I won't change over directly. There are some disturbing signals from the Seti camp that in future the credits will be corrected by the Boinc software itself for projects that award too high (and maybe too low) according to the almighty Seti bobo's. Not sure whether the Boinc client or Boinc server or a combination will be used for that. But it's an idea I most definitely don't like.

I have one official 6.2.6 running under Windows Vista 64-bit.
So far I have no problems with it , but I have tested it only on 2 projects yet.

I have crunch3r's 6.1.0 version on Linux 64-bit. Runs pretty stable as far as I can tell. No problems. But it probably can't be compared to the official release.

The version of Crunch3r is based on 5.10.x , so the previous release of BOINC.
I see on the official site there is a 6.2.xx and a 6.3.xx.
I wonder what's the difference, maybe it's time to try something out.

On Linux I'm still using 5.10.45 (installed by a Ubuntu package).

BOINC 6.2.14 is now the recommended version for all platforms.

    You can download it here.

So, our team strategy is to wait with installing this upgrade on our main computers ? Does this version actually have that "seti credit correction" feature ?

Usually everyone decides for him/herself when the time is ripe to switch. I will wait a few more weeks and see if all runs stable. Maybe install a test version on 1 machine.

After reading up on the Seti crackdown on high credit projects, I think it will be a server side only solution. The clients will probably not play a role in it. It *may* however, like it has always been, be interesting to use the client version that gives the highest benchmark values.

The new client is supposed to have better support for windows vista and have enhanced security. I just formated my vista so I'll try it out this evening (though its a bit too warm atm to have a CPU running at 100% :s)

I installed 6.2.14 on a machine. It looks exactly the same as the previous versions. Benchmark values are also +/- the same as in 5.10.45.

    On the + side:
    - No longer requires administrator rights to run in Vista. Good thing. That means it can now automatically start up with Vista without having to disable UAC.

    On the - side:
    - Boinc now requires 2 *different* directories: 1 where to put its program, and 1 for the projects' data. Pretty annoying. After an upgrade you have to move all your data files, otherwise you have to reconnect to your projects and lose WU in progress. This move includes everything under "projects", and a bunch of xml files that were originally in the Boinc directory. Or... have I overlooked something and made it all too difficult for me?

The boinc pages state that it'll copy everything for you if you install over an older version. So you shouldn't do any copying.
